I currently live in Milan and am enrolled in the Associazione Italiana Sommelier level 1 course. I plan to relocate to Los Angeles in early 2010 for work, and to complete levels 2 and 3 of the Sommelier course as well.

By virtue of living, working and studying in Italy off and on since 1991, I have an extensive knowledge of Italian food and wine: regions, producers, grape varietals, vinification techniques, terroir, abbinamenti (Italian food and wine pairings), and earned a Masters in Gastronomic Sciences at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Colorno, Italy, March 2007.

As a commercially successful travel photographer, published writer and author of two food and wine blogs with a large following, I bring a strong creative and intellectual aesthetic to the Italian wine community.

From working in a 400 year old salumeria in Modena, to leading guided tours of an acetaia of traditional balsamic vinegar, helping build a Southern Italian wine list in New York City and working in a shop specializing in Italian wines, I have had the practical experience and pleasure of working with a demanding and knowledgeable clientele

Great show, had field access. "Beautiful Day" was incandescent, so was "Unforgettable Fire". Stadio San Siro is LOUD!!!

Absolutely stunning show...U2 brought dusted off old classics like "The Unforgettable Fire" and "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)", and revitalized "Where The Streets Have No Name" by teasing out a long intro and bringing back the red screens like back in the day. During "Angel of Harlem", Bono added snippets of "Man in the Mirror" and "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" as a tribute to Michael Jackson. The band even connected w/astronauts from the International Space Station, supposedly live from Outer Space. But it dragged on too long and was kind of lame. The Desmond Tutu speech was surprisingly cool and a little funny (the Arch's intonation perhaps), inserted as a segue between "Walk On" and "...Streets".

Bono seemed to have lost focus, or lost energy towards the end of the show, and the group as a whole botched "One", and had to re-start it in the middle. "Moment of Surrender" from No Line on the Horizon closed the show.

Treviso-- hidden jewel of the Veneto

Only 30 minutes by train from Venezia, canal-laced Treviso is a perfect daytrip, and when the foggy mist creeps up in the evening, enjoy a prosecco outside in the cool air. Treviso and the surrounding agricultural region is well known for radicchio, Prosecco (Valdobbiadene-Conegliano), and tiramisù was first whipped in a pasticceria in the historic center. Best restaurant is Toni del Spin, with its daily changing menu and old time osteria vibe.

Canals in Bologna?

When you think of Bologna, a few words come to mind: ragù, mortadella, communism, etc. But canals? They do exist, and I found one particularly scenic one on Via Marsala, in Bologna's historic center, not far from Via Indipendenza. At night, river rafting trips are organized guerrilla-style at the side of the canal. Not quite Venezia or Treviso, but it gives this city full of architectural and culinary gravitas a different dimension.

Cinque Terre after a rainstorm

I warned my friend Ellie that I will not go hiking in Cinque Terre if rain is forecast. We checked the weather online and sure enough, no rain. It was warm and lovely, the paths not too crowded starting from Riomaggiore. We lunched at Cantina Mananan in Corniglia, then proceeded towards Vernazza. Sure enough, drip drip drip then a downpour when it was warm and sunny twenty minutes prior. Uncharacteristically, I, for lack of a classier term, pussed out and hid under a canopy of branches. My excuse was to protect expensive camera equipment not knowing how resistant the camera bag was to torrential rain. Anyway, after Ellie rightfully ditched me for Vernazza, and after a half hour of standing stock still, I made a run for it, literally, and did not slow my pace until I reached civilization in Vernazza.

The two photos are of Vernazza after the storm. I really like the palette of the porch area of this home and the urn is a nice touch. The harbor is over photographed, but I think this angle is quite unique, with the puddle on the ledge and the water and church well lit, and cute fluffy clouds.
